Behind the scenes (or underneath the ice) of indoor ice rinks is a labyrinth of steel pipes filled with freezing water imbedded in a concrete slab. The temperature of the slab must be maintained at a temperature just below freezing to preserve the skating surface of ice.

The water used for cooling the concrete slab is contained in a 500 gallon stainless steel reservoir, pumped through chillers and recirculated as needed. The reservoir and filters required frequent cleaning due to algae growth. Chemically managing the water caused corrosion in the tank and pipes which required repairs of more than $10,000 every couple of years.

After Septor 16 was installed, the reservoir remained shiny, filters didn’t clog and chillers required less maintenance. Septor 16 has operated successfully for 3 years, saving an average of more than $5,000 in repairs annually.

Using the system also lowered the pH of the water resulting in faster rates of freezing. The system was optimized to precisely manage the water at pH 6.8 which provided more control of their process.
